Welcome to Language Arts 10!
This page will provide you with the information and resources you need to be successful in Language Arts 10.
Over the course of the year, we'll be engaging in the typical Language Arts activities--reading, writing and thinking. We'll be preparing and practicing for the High School Proficiency Exam, which all 10th graders across the state take. The good news: all of my students have passed the reading and writing portions for the last two years! Pay attention and work hard, and you will, too!
Our reading will include Lord of the Flies, Antigone, Julius Caesar, All Quiet on the Western Front, Catcher in the Rye and Night. Shorter non-fiction pieces, short stories and poetry will also be included in the curriculum. While lots of the material we read features death, despair and darkness, I promise it won't be too depressing. Really.
We'll be working on formal essays in a variety of forms, with emphasis on literary analysis and persuasive modes. We'll be continuting last year's work on writing good paragraphs, selecting concrete detail, writing good commentary. We'll also be paying attention to sentence craft throughout the year.
I'm so excited to spend the year with you (and your parents)! We're going to work hard, but I promise we'll have some fun, too!
Need to check up on the daily homework assignment? You want the Daily Diary page.
The Course Information page explains in detail how this course is aligned with Common Core Standards. Honestly, this page is more for your parents than you!
